This sale is for a lovely Dogon Antelope plank mask from Mali. The Dogon are a people numbering near the 400,000 mark in the Mali and Burkina Faso region. Well known for their intricately carved doors, they settled the region of their inhabitance after fleeing persecution of their indigenous religious beliefs from the invading Muslims population to the north. Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. Though there are more than eighty styles of Dogon mask, they are generally all characterized by a simplistic rendering of the human or animal form in a reductionist, almost cubist method. This plank mask, featuring an effigy of the antelope at the base of its superstructure, follows that motif, with geometric facial features and pigmented embellishments. The antelope is a culturally important animal in the region, and is particularly notable in the art of the neighboring Bambara people, a likely source of influence for this and similar pieces. Around its perimeter is a series of raised ridges, which are also present down the 'nose' creating a central facial ridge on both the mask face and the uppermost superstructure face. The mask is nicely pigmented on its frontal service, and exhibits familiar signs of aging. It is a lovely and unusual mask style that will nicely compliment a West African are 26.5" tall x 5" x 2.5".
