Donald Davidson - Autograph Poem Signed

DONALD DAVIDSON. Autograph Poem signed: "Donald Davidson", 5x3 card. Headed by Davidson: "From 'The Ninth Part of Speech'". In full: "Few are left who know the ancient rule/That tame abstract must wed the wild/particular/In school or art, but most of all in school,/Else learning's spent to gild a fool/At market, altar, bench, or bar." "The Ninth Part of Speech: A Verse Letter to Louis Zahner" was published in 1960. American poet, author, essayist and social and literary critic Donald Davidson (1893-1968) is best known for his association with the "Fugitives", a group of poets (including John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate and Robert Penn Warren) who met to read and critique each others' verses, and the Southern Agrarians, a group that opposed modern industrial society and spoke out about the "vulgarities" of progress. A veteran of WWI, Davidson published five volumes of poetry between 1924-1966, and he was also well known as the editor (1923-1930) of the "Nashville Tennessean" book page, writing reviews of more than 370 books. Davidson also wrote histories, including his two-volume, The Tennessee (1946, 1948), part of the Rivers of America series, and he was the author of several college textbooks, including American Composition and Rhetoric (1939). Ink smudged at the "F" in Few". Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
