"The Ninth Part of Speech: A Verse Letter to Louis Zahner" was published in 1960. American poet, author, essayist and social and literary critic Donald Davidson (1893-1968) is best known for his association with the "Fugitives", a group of poets (including John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate and Robert Penn Warren) who met to read and critique each others' verses, and the Southern Agrarians, a group that opposed modern industrial society and spoke out about the "vulgarities" of progress. A veteran of WWI, Davidson published five volumes of poetry between 1924-1966, and he was also well known as the editor (1923-1930) of the "Nashville Tennessean" book page, writing reviews of more than 370 books. Davidson also wrote histories, including his two-volume, The Tennessee (1946, 1948), part of the Rivers of America series, and he was the author of several college textbooks, including American Composition and Rhetoric (1939).
