Heavy, coffee table type book. An insightful photographic portrait of a smallBlack Belt Alabamatown in transition. Camden, Alabama is in Wilcox County, 40 miles south of Selma in the heart of rural Black Belt country.Steeped in tradition, it is also aplace shadowed by the poverty of its blackAND white residents and by racism. A wide range of photographs of actual residents of Camden. The photographs were taken over a five-year period -primarily during the early to mid 1960s Civil Rights "movement days." the text is in the residents' own words. Lengthy blurb by noted black author Ralph Ellison - THE INVISIBLE MAN (winner of the National Book Award in the early 1950sbut recently and infamouslybanned in North Carolina) -on outside rear panel of dust jacket. MUCH SOUGHT ALABAMA PHOTO BOOK! Dust jacket is good and solid but is somewhat worn with some rubbing and a 2 inch scratch on the front panel. Dust jacket flaps taped to blank endpapers of book with masking tape long ago. You MAY be able to remove the masking tape - I did not want to try. THE BOOK ITSELF IS NEAR FINE TO FINE. (the fine print ... [sigh] ... but please read :-)
