Dwight Eisenhower 1957 Typed Letter Signed As President Days Before Inauguration:
34th President. Typed letter signed (TLS)"D.E."AS PRESIDENT, one page, January 16, 1957, 7x10.5, "DDE / The White House" stationery, to his brother, Edgar Eisenhower, in full:
Of course I had hoped that you and Lucy would be in Washington for the celebration of your birthday anniversary, but in view of your health I am glad you decided against the trip. A note from Lucy tells me that you have shown steady improvement of late, and I pray that your progress continues uninterruptedly.
At any rate, have the best possible birthday -- and a healthier year to come. Those of the Eisenhower family who happen to be in Washington on the nineteenth will drink a special toast to you.
In fine condition. Two file holes at top.
Two-page carbon of Edgar's January 7, 1957 letter to Ike is included. The letter, which was also sent to the 3 other Eisenhower brothers, states that Edgar cannot attend the Inauguration, under doctor's orders. He states: "I would like the world to know that my absence from your Inauguration is not to be interpreted as a disagreement between you and me, over policy or anything else. And since the newspapers are so prone to interpret an act to the disadvantage of everyone, they could possibly make such a claim.
Superb personal letter as President.
The two brothers (there were five Eisenhower brothers in all) were very different. Edgar, who held very strong politically-conservative views, felt that the federal government was usurping power from the states. Because of his strong feelings against centralization, Edgar appears to have avoided Washington throughout his brother's administration, even refusing to attend his second inauguration. Yet according to letters between them, the brothers' relationship was usually amicable, often lighthearted.
