Up for sale is a CHARLES EAMES 400 STORAGE UNIT, in near mint condition. Dimensions are: 58.5” high x 47.5” wide x 16” deep. The original ESUs were designed by Eames and manufactured by HERMAN MILLER from 1949 to 1955. This unit was made by MODERNICA in Los Angeles, USA, who started producing them in 1987, well before Miller started making them again. Panels in this one are red, black, gray, and perforated steel. The unit also has six adjustable nylon foot glides

The Modernica units adhered strictly to the original design standards in regards to dimensions, frame construction and panel materials. This unit actually has a nice upgrade unavailable on the Miller pieces in that the metal legs/uprights are actually powder coated in black, so they will always look like new and not oxidize like the zinc finished metal ones. Constucted of high quality maple ply, powder coated masonite and steel, galvanized perforated steel, and dimple-formed plywood for the sliding doors on the bottom two shelves.

These units were designed in an effort to produce economical household and office furniture using industrial production techniques.Charles and Ray Eames’s uncompromisingly progressive design was lauded by designers and architects of the time, but not readily embraced by a post-war general public. Herman Miller manufactured and marketed the Eames Storage Units (ESU) in 1950, and soon ended their production in 1955. Modernica has been building Case Study Units since 1987.”
