Early - 1700's Cobbler Work Ledger And Store Supply Listings - Shoes & Groceries For Sale
Up for sale is a crudely cut handmade raw hide leather, string bound ledger with the first entry dated "1785". The first pages in this ledger are hand written by a person who was a cobbler by trade and documents the work he did and for whom. Some entries have a price paid for the service or a price owed for work done. The final pages appear to be entries pertaining to supplies and grocery type items purchased and sold. The final pages are dated "1817". This is a wonderful piece of historical documentation. It measures approx. 6 3/4" wide x 8 1/4" tall and is held together nicely with the pages showing various isues including heavy toning (first page and a center page - shown), spotting and discoloration, with10 or so pages showing water staining (mainly towards the spine), and the last page has a few small holes in it. The pages show edgewear and edge curling etc. The first page is personalized in ink near the bottom with a date of 59 (1959 I imagine - when someone acquired this early piece for their collection?)
