19TH CENTURY VIZAGAPATAM (INDIA) SANDALWOOD SEWING BOX WITH FAUX IVORY & PEWTER DECORATION
Description: Lovely early 19th century Anglo-Indian sewing box with the type of work known as Sadeli mosaic, which involves creating complicated geometric forms with tiny pieces, in this case of faux ivory (in its original colour, but also dyed red and green) and pewter, on a wooden background, which in this case is of sandalwood. This gorgeous box is fitted with a mirror and a number of drawers (some of them lidded) and other devices, such as a large bobbin for threads, and other fittings, such as faux ivory thread barrels (also decorated) with mosaic and thimble, or a padded pin cushion.

Condition: The box is in a very solid condition, and it can be handled for its exhibition and appreciation without fear for its condition. There are some losses to the decoration and other small parts (such as the ring pulls for the drawers’ lids, left fastener of the mirror), and other signs of use, all better illustrated by the pictures. Please, see the attached pictures for a better illustration of its condition, and do not hesitate to ask me for more if you should need them.
