EARLY 19TH CENTURY FRUIT TREE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY MARY SPENCER - 1800:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Spencer - 1800. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree with a crown above which has a bird and flower motif to its right and left. There is a flower basket on each side of the tree\'s foliage, whilst a bird stands on either side of its trunk, a floral motif at their side. The bottom section of the linen is stitched with Mary\'s details \"Mary Spencer finished this in the year of our Lord 1800\" with a bird sitting on a flower in each of the lower corners. The whole thing is then surrounded by a meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places and a bit grubby. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are several areas of damage to both the field and the edges of the linen, some of which has resulted in small areas of stitch loss. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 11 3/4 \" across x 11 1/2 \"
