EARLY 19TH CENTURY MAP OF ENGLAND SAMPLER BY ANN SUTTON - c.1830:

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Sutton. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1830 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper right corner of the linen is stitched with a flora plaque containing Ann\'s name and the subject of her sampler \"A Concise Map of England By Ann Sutton.\" The rest of the linen is finely stitched with a detailed map of England with place names worked in black and the county borders delineated by different coloured silks. The map ventures in to Scotland in the upper section, over to Ireland on the left edge and into France in the bottom right corner.The linen has overall dark discolouration with areas of water staining, more noticeable in the lower half. The colours of the coloured silks have mellowed from their original vibrancy but the effect is a still a pleasing one. The colour of the black silk is good with some thinning in places. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the linen have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some minor fraying. Measures 14 1/2 \" x 16 1/2 \"
