En-route to Quincy, Lincoln stopped in Monmouth, this portrait taken two days before the sixth debate with Stephen Douglas in Quincy. Just before the ambro was made, Lincoln gave a three-hour speech to an enthusiastic crowd. The lean, picturesque lawyer from the backwoods was now a national figure.
