EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY JANE ATTREE - 1840:

Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Jane Attree - 1840. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The top section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket with a bird, flowers and carnation basket on either side. There is a tree beneath the central flower basket with a strawberry, fruit basket, fruit bush, bird and tulip on each side, flower baskets. flowers and birds above. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket with a floral urn and tree and flower motifs on each side. There is a crown above the central flower basket flanked by butterfly, bird, flower and grape motifs. The bottom section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse with Jane\'s details beneath

There is a row of tree and flower motifs below the verse with birds and dogs above. The whole thing is then surrounded by a meandering trefoil leaf border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby in places, and the colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Jane first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are several areas of damage to the field of the linen, some of which have caused a small amount of stitch loss. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The edges of the linen have also been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some minor fraying and a small amount of stitch loss on the bottom edge. Measures 111/2 \" x 15 1/2 \"
