This is a beautiful Edwardian Enamelled Sterling silver stamp book, It was made by
Crisford & Norris Ltd of Vyse Street, Birmingham and then hallmarked at the
Birmingham assay office in 1902.
It measures
around 1 inch (55mm)
wide not including the suspension ring by 1 3/8 inches (30mm) tall by
just under 1/4 of an inch (7mm) thick. The rear carries a
set of British Sterling silver hallmarks for Birmingham 1902 - 1903 and a makers mark of 'C
& N'
for Crisford & Norris Ltd, the upper edge of the interior carrier has
the lion passant and date letter.
It has a weight on my
scales of 12 grams.
It is delicately made in the form of a leather bound book, the front
cover is enamelled in blue with the word 'Stamps' and there are bright
cut leaves, the spine has two double bands and supports a suspension
ring, the rear cover has the hallmarks. the pages are represented by
engraved lines on the inner carrier, this opens via a small thumb piece
to reveal a small cage to contain a few stamps, this is gilded. It is
free from personalisation.
It is ingood overall condition with a nice patination
that includes some fine marks and scratches, there are some slight
shadows to the rear that suggest it may have originally been gilded all
over. The blue enamel is in good order with only a couple of minute
losses, one to the top of the spine of the 'a' and a possible loss to
the back curve of the 's', both of these may simply where the enamel
failed to take rather then actual losses. Please see the pictures.
