Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous Antique Late 19th Century Victorian Photogravure Bookplate titled “There’s Life In The Old Dog Yet.”, from the original painting by the well known listed artist ‘Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’ (English, 1802-1873), whose printed signature does not appear on the piece, but whose printed name appears lower left in the outer margin area just beneath the image, and is after the original painting done in 1838. The title appears printed lower middle in the outer plate margin area. This piece we are listing is not a modern reproduction, and there is no publisher info printed on the piece, but it came from the book Treasures Of Art, published by Carson & Simpson, Philadelphia, in 1889 (see pic of the original info below from the book about the image-not included with sale). This Photogravure is printed on a nice heavier off-white wove stock and is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with Fine Detail, Rich Tones & Crisp Blacks-simply beautiful. The size with margins is 10-9/16” x 16-7/16”, Image size is 8-1/16”x 10-1/8”. The piece still has the linen strip glued to the back of it along the bottom edge from where it was attached in the book, and still has the gilt edges on the other 3 sides. Only one tiny 3/16” outer margin edge crack-tear (upper right corner), which is repaired from behind with archival tape for protection and is negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Minimal slight small creases here & there in the image & outer margin areas, which aren’t noticeable at all in the image area. Extremely minimal (only a handful) of foxing spots & specks here & there in the outer margin areas, and none visible in the image area—also negligible. Normal light toning of the stock from age (a little more so around the edges). Extremely minimal edge wear and a couple tiny dog-ear bends in a few of the outer margin corners. Any outer margin issues are also negligible. This gorgeous antique late 19th Century Victorian photogravure bookplate has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
