Presenting a rare and ancient Coptic Ethiopian Handwritten Biblical Manuscript Leaf, probably dating from the late 17th to 18th century!Written in the Ethiopic (Ge\'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these MSS are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and could be as old as the 14th century. We estimate this leaf to be a much older example, probably done in the late 1600s/ 1700s. Leaf includes some hand painted depictions of angels and personages as well.Certainly old vellum; there is much aging to this example, with losses, staining, and wear, which is normal for these rare gems. The leaf is a palimpsest of sorts; upon close examinatoon we can see the original rule hand-lined on and used with a block of writing on the left side; the right side interestingly shows a contemporary, more scratchier hand , probably from around the same time as the fist hand, and lastly, it shows what looks to be the shadow or a very faded larger hand used on the right side. The verso has no handwriting but has a doodle of a head, as shown.
It measures 5\" wide, 5.75\" tall.
