Thisis ahighly desirableand very scarce originaltintype portrait photoof a sweetbouncy babe being comforted and held still inits mother's concealed arms-- as shown.But why this bizarre approach? Well, exposure times for taking a photograph in the 19th century were quite long, and even the improved tintype method could take several minutes of sitting still, not easy for an infant to be sure! So, moms would be draped in cloth so that their presence and voice would comfort the little dear. Then the final product could be matted and framed in such a way as to obscure the mother's presence. In this one, which is quite stunning, the mom is sitting with the child but she looks like a gray ghost.
