Up for sale is a Very Rare Set of 19thc Chinese Carved White and Emerald Green Jadeite Figural Table Screens. The Screens are Incredible Museum Quality examples. The Screens are much nicer and more impressive in person than I can take pictures of. The Screens are very unique pieces, and I am sure one of a kind examples. The Screens themselves are carved of a truly beautiful highly translucent natural White and Emerald green jadeite. The Screens also have amazing and very unique carved wood mythical ox figural stands. The Stands are made of a rich dark hardwood which has a beautiful and original patina throughout. The Ox figures also has great ox bone carved horns. The Screens are finely carved with imperial figural scenes to the front sides, along with bird figural scenes to the back side. The Screens have some original natural inclusions through the jadeite and the wood stands have a couple small chips and nicks, but overall the screens and stands are in very fine untouched original condition. The Screens are amazing display pieces, the Jadeite plaques themselves measuring 7 3/8 inches wide, by 8 1/2 inches tall, and 1/4 inch thick. The Plaques within the stands measure 14 inches tall.

Provenance: The Screens have very good and important provenance. The Screen have their Original invoices from when they were purchased in the year 1934 for 800 dollars, which I believe translates to around 50-60 thousand dollars of today money. It was not just anyone buying the screen at this time for this amount, mostly during the depression. Most regular people at the time were not making this much in a year. The Screens were sold in 1934 by the Ralph Chait Gallery in New York. The Ralph Chait Gallery is one of the most highly respected Asian arts dealers in the world. They have sold many highly important pieces and collections other the years. They have been in business for over 100 years, and are still in business to this day. On the Ralph Chait invoice Mr Chait also comments that the Screens are from the important collection of Edwin Kreen. Mr. Kreen was an important figure of the period and was also a very highly respected Asian art collector and appraisers of his time. Mr Kreen was also art director to one of the most influential and wealthiest people in the US at the time Edith Rockefeller. Kreen had direct ties to two of the biggest and most important Asian arts dealers in the earlier 1900’s period, C.T.Loo, and Yamanaka & Co, which is where he acquired the vast majority of his collection. Also included with the original invoices is a sale catalogue which Mr Kreen organized in the year 1938 with his collection of important Ancient Chinese Wood and Bronze Sculptures. Within the catalogue as you can see it makes note to Kreen’s ties to both Edith Rockefeller and Yamanaka. It also says that prior to the sale Kreen’s collection was featured at Ralph Chait Galleries in New York, which perfectly ties into the sale of these Screens from his collection. As I am sure you realize having provenance like this is very important and from what I have seen usually makes such examples much more desirable finds and investment pieces. The Screens are so unique I really have no idea what they would currently be worth. I do know it may be a very long time before you see other examples like these and with this kind of provenance up for sale, if ever!
