Exceptionaly Rare Chinese Export Silver Warrior Mug/ Tankard. Wongshing C.1850 For Sale
Presented is an EXCEPTIONALLY RARE and EARLY CHINESE EXPORT SILVER WARRIOR MUG/TANKARD made by WONGSHING OF CANTON C.1850
The mug/tankard is VERY FINELY EMBOSSED AND ENGRAVED WITH 6 LARGE WARRIORS ON HORSEBACK. There are also 2 MEN HOLDING FLAGS. There is a FORT and ANOTHER BUILDING in the background. There are SEVERAL DIFFERENT TREES, ROCKS and RIVERS in the scene. The REPOUSSE work is AMAZING as is the FINE ENRAVED DETAIL. The background is very finely matted.
The appliedHANDLE is of A LARGE FIERCE, SCALY DRAGON. There is an oval unmonogrammed (never been monogrammed) vacant cartouche set into the fort.
This is a particularly FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF A CHINESE EXPORT SILVER WARRIOR MUG/TANKARD. THE DECORATION IS PARTICULARLY GOOD AND THE MUG IS AN EARLY EXAMPLE. IT IS CLEARLY MARKED UNDERNEATH WITH MARKS FOR WONGSHING OF CANTON (WITH RARE BRITISH PSEUDO MARKS).
The mug/tankard has an unusual early construction of separate EXTERIOR, INTERIOR and BASE. This is a rather charming feature.
The mug/tankard stands 11.25cm (just under 4.5 inches) to top of handle. The base diameter is 8cm (well over 3 inches) and it weighs a solid 9.5 troy ounces (294 grams)
Condition is AMAZING (especially as this is an early Chinese Export piece). The decoration is SUPER CRISP! there are NO REPAIRS and NO DAMAGE whatsoever! The gold washed interior has had some wear (I am being picky).
MY PICTURES DO NO JUSTICE TO THIS WONDERFUL ITEM!
