ANTIQUE CUT & HAND ETCHED CRYSTAL COMPOTE CENTERPIECE
MAGNIFICENT EARLY AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIREREPOUSSE SILVER WORK
DIANAKOPFOF DIANA'S HEAD HALLMARK
Please offer with confidence and view my 100% positive 5.0 response, every effort goes into quality photoswith a detailed description and much research.
You are offerding on a truly gorgeous very hard to find Victorian era Austro-Hungarian Empire .800 silver(nearly sterling) cut glass and finely etched compote centerpiece bowl, ornately fashioned throughout withexquisite detail. Stands 9 1/4" tall, the upper dish or bowl has a 9 1/2" diameter, base is approx.5" diameter, 6 1/2" including feet.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire succeeded the Austrian Empire in 1867. At this time the dual monarchy decreed a uniform system of hallmarking for the entire empire, the empire was dissolved in 1919.
Hallmark confirms Austro-Hungarian Empire, early production featuring the Dianakopf of Diana's head first issued in 1867, the cartouche shape and number within indicate the silver fineness. Beginning in 1872, a letter was added to indicate the city of assey. Small dog head mark on clover fitting cap looks to have a HD hallmark.
Thestunning wheel cut and hand etched crystalbowl or serving dishresembles gorgeous period Czech. Bohemian, re:Moser 'style' quality glass of the Victorian era, extremely intricate withgraceful garlands, foliage swags, and birds in flight, the perimeter is beautifully scalloped while the interior of the bowl is wheel cut for a beautiful contrast, a brillant cut.The bowl comes off easily from it's silver stand as the center four leaf clover fitting cap is threaded and unscrews.
The silver base is totally silver (not weighted), .800fine (800/1000) and features repousse roseswith elaborate scroll work, open cartouche area on the base perhaps designed for a monogram, has no monograms, the silver repousse workmanship is superb, crisp and highly detailed, please view photos, all angles shown, silver alone weighs 250.6 grams.
Hallmarkswere very difficult to capture with a camera, I tried several times and was not happy with the clarity,so I used a jewelers 60X loupe to decipher, and provided a clear reference of the hallmarks found on this compote, please view photo #10. Thesilver base exhibits the Dianakopf of Diana's head and thefour leaf clover silver fittingcap exhibits the small dog head mark used on smaller pieces.
The condition is miraculous, especially considering it's century plus age. Silver was left as acquired, not recently cleaned or polished.Iscrutinized thecrystal bowl several times and used a jewelers loupe in an attempt to locate any chips andfound nothing to report. Upon removing the 2 1/2" convex shaped silver clover fitting cap, I noted a couple of very very tiny nips around the glass hole under the silver cap that cannot be seen, most sellers would never mention, photo #11.
Please view all the photos and use the supersize feature as the photos are an integral part of the description and show a true an accurate account. This is truly amagnificent and rare treasure worthy of the finest collections...it is fit for a queen...don't let this beauty pass you by...you will adore it once in hand...
