his thrilling featherweight quilt has it all: a really intriguing and unique block design (I discovered that the quiltmaker had simply approached it as a grand Four-Block, with a couple extra applique figures along those few background seams), pitch-perfect border marrying dainty sawteeth with graceful applique, stunningly lush, intricate and expert hand-quilting and wonderfully, crisp, unfaded condition.
The only real footnote is some light staining to the background which is even less visible in person than in my images.
Originally collected in Central Ohio but without any further provenance, this quilt has been in private hands for the last few decades. I date it to around the 1860's.Size
The quilt measures about 82 x 84 inches. The four large square blocks are about 31 inches square, the thick-stalked tulip motifs around 11 x 13 inches, the little applique yellow buttons on the different blossoms under 1-inch across and the border vine about 3/8 to 1/2 inch wide. The little half-square triangles of the sawtooth border are about 1 1/4 inch square.
The hand-quilting is phenomenal, with 9-15 little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The outer border is quilted with outlines that then give way to ranks of conforming echo-quilting (at a scant 1/4 to 3/8-inch spacing) filling in the whole ground. Additional details and inset outline are quilted on the surface of the leaves and blooms. The sawtooth border is quilted triangle by triangle in tiny inset outlines.
And then there's the body of the quilt: an absolutely lavish swirl of mostly double-outlined motifs that run from hearts and teadropd to four-leaf motifs, big flat blossoms, tulips and showy feathered wreaths with bullseye centers. It's really virtuoso work, a delight to behold and with something new discovery at every turn.
Entirely handmade with outstanding hand-applique and crisp hand-piecing.
Backing, Binding & Batting
The backing is a crisp white solid with very light but widespread yellowing, toning and staining.
The wonderfully narrow, scant 1/4-inch straight-grain binding is entirely hand-applied. It's in excellent condition and the really minimal degree to which the oxblood red's tiny black motifs are wearing away just underscores how little the quilt has been touched or washed.
The batting is absolutely whisper thin and completely even.
The quilt's condition is excellent: strong, sturdy, crisp and clean. A single red triangle in the border has a tab tear, and I note a tiny 1/4-inch tear hidden in the white background. Plus there are a couple faint streaks of blue to the green calico in one area. And beyond this, I just find large, faint discolorations to the background. I've photographed these in detail for you and am happy to note that they're far less distinct to me in person than they appear in my images.
