Up for sale is an Exceptionally Rare 17th Century Japanese Edo Period Ko-Kutani Enamel Tiger Figural Punch Bowl. The Bowl is a very interesting and rarely seen piece. I was told around 30 years ago the collector took the bowl to Christies in London where he was living at the time. They told him the bowl is an exceptionally rare 17th century example and that if the condition was better the bowl would have had an sale estimate of conservatively 40-60,000GBPs. But in its current condition at the time they still said 4-6,000GBPs. I think at the time in the 1980s the British Pound was right around 2 to 2 1/2 times an American dollar, so you can do the math and see at the time even in this condition they believed the bowl to be quite a value piece. They said even in its present state it should still be an attractive piece for a museum to have seeing there are only a hand full of examples like this known to still exist. They also commented that this central Tiger figural cartouche is one of the most highly sought after period designs that can be found. The Bowl could also be restored if one desired, and is an amazing period study piece as well. The Bowl has a very interesting design with prowling Tiger figure, and vibrant yellow and green enamel work throughout. The Bowl itself is potted of a pure white porcelain. As you can see the bowl is damaged throughout, and is being sold in as is condition, and is not eligible for return due to its present condition. The Bowl is an impressive large size measuring 14-1/2 inches wide by 6 inches tall.
I do know that some Ko-Kutani examples from this period have sold for some astonishing amounts over the years. Some examples even into the 10's and 100's of thousands, and most are just small plates and dishes and not close to the size of this piece. If you research you will see these numbers are not at all out of line. The only period ko-kutani bowl I could find of comparable size to this that has sold was at Christies New York in 1994, sale 7868, lot 214. The bowl is noted as having a double gourd design, it was noted as being chipped, and it sold for 497,000US dollars. Having said this I will obviously let you make up your own mind in regards to its current value in its present state. The Bowl will be sold to the high buyer regardless of what the winning offer amount may end up being. I do believe it could be a very long time before you have the opportunity to purchase such a rarely seen example again. I am sure this is one of the most important examples of early Japanese ceramics I have ever offered. A Truly Amazing example.
