A RARE, IMPRESSIVE & EXCEPTIONALLY HEAVY (MASSIVE) ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY GERMAN STERLING SILVER (LOTH 14) FLATWARE SET. A CRESTED & ROMANTIC STYLIZED ACANTHUS MOTIF...
This immensly heavy set dates prior to 1880 super heavy set consists of 18 pieces.
6 Forks - 20.4 ozs / 3.4 ozs. ea.(21 cm or 8 3/8")
6 Spoons - 21.7 ozs. / 3.6 ozs. ea. (21.5 cm or 8 1/2")
(TOTAL SILVER WEIGHT IS ABOUT 52 OZS. CONSERVATIVELY ALLOWING FOR ABOUT 1/3 OF THE WEIGHT OF EACH KNIFE FOR SILVER.)
Possibly & probably the heaviest flatware pattern I know of. Equivalent to serving pieces in heft. Whether or not you own a full set of flatware already, this would be a wonderful set to own and use. For lunch, for everyday, forever! Although it's made 140-150 years ago, it's more like today's modern stainless sets that we use everyday and it's in superb condition!
In fact, the flatware patterns of today, the kind you would go get right now, are modeled after the old French and German sets of the mid to late 19th century. Big 3 piece place settings. This is in contrast to the many, many sterling flatware sets available on or in the antique market...
Much more substantial than any American sterling silver maker of any time frame.
For example, pick up a book on American silver flatware of the 19th and 20th century; there's no pattern, whether Gorham, Tiffany, Towle or Whiting... that is even close in weight and size. Even the sets marked M (massive) are far smaller and lighter.
Ok - sorry for the redundance... as you can tell, I'm very impressed by this set's quality and style. I've sold thousands of pieces of flatware through the years and this is one of the finest ever.
The heft and quality of this set would allow for a fine 'everday' silverware set. The knives have stainless blades in impeccable condition. The steel is marked: W. & S. SORENSEN, DENMARK, STAINLESS. The owners of this estate lived in Denmark for many years prior to returing to America. Their other Danish made flatware set is available shortly in our other sales.
The pieces are marked: 14 LOTH, Hambert & John, then: C (inset in stamp mark), then a bear rampant & K (inset in stamp mark). See photo please...The LOTH is high sterling grade for Germany. It indicates 87.5% purity as opposed to the much more common 12 or 13 loth.
The standing or rampant bear is Berlin's city mark (Brandenburg). The loth system is used by many contries in Europe in the 19th century. It was used in Germany prior to 1880's and dates back to the 1700's. In 1818, there was seen the use of a secondary assay mark. On these pieces, it's the stamped C. An inset K mark indicates the initial assayer's guarantee. Lastly, there is the maker: Hambert & John.
The set is in exceptional condition with the acanthus design being crisp. The spoons are without dings, dents or wear. The forks tines are squared and not worn. The knives blades have been replaced with new Danish stainless steel blades at some point. They're like new and are semi-serrated. One of the knive handles has a small dint on the butt end. We assure the condition is excellent for age and it's been very well cared for. Obviously treasured by the owners. You too will be proud of the set.... You'll endeavour to show it off whenever possible as everyone will marvel at the weight, the style and the age!
Below is the SPOON front, back, bowl. The relief is crisp. The spoon bowl still has it's flat rim.
