Animation drawings are the original models from which animation cels are traced. They are considered by many collectors to be the purist form of the art of cartoon production.
Walter Lantz (1899-1994) produced and directed animated films for Universal Studios from 1927 until 1972. He produced over 600 theatrical cartoons. He introduced his first full color cartoon in 1939. Woody Woodpecker was introduced in 1940, featuring in nearly a third of Lantz's cartoons.
