This is one of the very early glass ornaments, made in Lauscha, Germany. Blown without the use of a mold--free blown from a single tube of glass, it was shaped into the ornament that you seeby the fathers in the German household. Then the mothers would paint and decorate the ornament. The grandmothers would do the wire-wrapping as they had the patience to do this very laborious difficult task. This was a cottage industry, a means for the German families to earn money during the winter when they could not work in the fields. A wonderful heritage in that each ornament is individually finished and a true work of art.
Unsilvered inside, it was lacquered a softpale blue-greencolor.
The top air ship, zeppelin is wrapped with lots and lots of silver crinkly wire.
Then wired to the air balloon, is a little gondola below.
And riding in that gondola is a little angel.
Wonderful with slight wax stains at bottom of her feet from dripping candles.
A great reminder of when trees were lit with only candles.
Then more heavy silver crinkly wire from back to front of ornament, with a loop.
This loop serves as a means to hang on the tree.
Wonderful little propellers in front of ship, to fly it through the sky.
Still tightly wrapped after all these decades.
