Early 1890s Clip-on Glass Lantern, Candle Holder. German Glass Ornament. For Sale
Early 1890s Glass Clip-onLantern Ornament, Candle Holder. Christmas Tree Ornament.
This is one of the early glass ornaments, made in Lauscha, Germany. This was a cottage industry, a means for the German families to earn money during the winter when they could not work in the fields. A wonderful heritage in that each ornament is individually finished and a true work of art. These were blown to be used as clip-on ornament Glass Candle Holders.
Very few of them survived as the heat of the candle in a cold unheated parlor often caused the glass to shatter, and the paint would lift somewhat as is the case with this ornament.
It is unsilvered, and molded into the shape of a real candle lantern type shape.
Red top and red bottom.
Ribbed sides, as if it is a paper lantern, with green leaves and red flowers.
It was meant to simulate one of those paper lanterns which held candles, but this is glass.
There is some paint wear.
Again, this is the way it arrived in our home, and it has not changed in over 35 years.
The molding is just precious, and this helped to create a higher glass shade for the candle.
A candle was inserted inside on the prongs of the clip
Then the outside prongs held the glass lantern.
But what a magnificant example of how we would light the tree with candles, and also create a magnificant glass ornament as well as one unit.
4.00" in height, and in really great condition.
