Early 1900s Indent with The Three Faces of Christ.

Glass German Glass Christmas Tree Ornament.

Silvered, and lacquered a soft pale gold color, somewhat faded in parts.

Three Faces of Christ.

One face is intact, and perfectly painted... crown of thorns on head, gold hair, etc.

One face is intact, but no paint.

One face is dark, as the silvering inside has turned dark.. no crack or hole..just dark inside.

2.50" and in very good condition, EXCEPT FOR WHAT IS MENTIONED ABOVE.

Glass ornament blown in Germany and hand painted there in the period before World War I.

I want to add this. Many forget that a positive form had to be carved out of pear wood, and what artistry that took. If a family was more wealthy, they purchased the molds. If they were a poorer family, they rented them from one of six companies who produced the molds for use in this cottage industry.

This was a cottage industry, a means for the Germans to make money during the winter when they could not work in the fields. The sons and fathers blew the ornaments. The girls and mom would silver the ornaments inside, and then individually paint the ornaments, and grandma would take to the train station in the spring when the others were back in the fields. Then they went to the sea coast, put on ships, and arrived in New York to be delivered across the country, and we used them to decorate our trees. The origin is Lauscha, Germany.

We are an older couple which are down-sizing, and put up one tree in our den and one in our dining room. These ornaments did not fit on the trees this year, and it seems senseless to keep them in boxes in the back closet. So hopefully new caretakers can be found for these German ornaments being listed tonight.
