Early 1900s Santa Shaped Bell. Unusual Glass German Christmas Tree Ornament.:
Santa Shaped Christmas Bell, with glass dinger inside so it actually rings.
Early 1900s German Glass Christmas Tree Ornament.
2.75" and in very good condition.
A more unusual shaped Santa Claus if you look carefully.
The hat, with the red cape around his shoulder is unusual.
Plus the molding of the tree, is more like a feather tree than a real tree.
And that black mustache.. well, we will get to that a bit later.
This was blown into a mold, but then quickly removed.
Then the glass was pushed in to form the concave of the bell.
That is evident if you look carefully at last picture, where it is not perfectly round.
What an experienced glass blower.. then the little wire, with the clear glass dinger.
A real accomplishment for the creator of this Santa Claus Bell.
We asked in Lauscha.. as we brought a picture along.
We asked curator, Helena Horn, but she had no idea.
Then we took the image down into the cottages of some of the older folks.
We questioned some older blowers.... they theorized that this was more a Father Christmas than Santa.
Played by an old man of the village, thus indicated by the black painted mustache.
Great detailing on top and bottom, with the matte finished white lacquer.
Yes, a little paint wear, but what an early neat ornament.
Blown before World War I.
This was a cottage industry, a means for the Germans to make money during the winter when they could not work in the fields. The sons and fathers blew the ornaments. The girls and mom would silver the ornaments inside, and then individually paint the ornaments, and grandma would take to the train station in the spring when the others were back in the fields. Then they went to the sea coast, put on ships, and arrived in New York to be delivered across the country, and we used them to decorate our trees. The origin is Lauscha, Germany.
We are an older couple which are down-sizing, and put up one tree in our den and one in our dining room. These ornaments did not fit on the trees this year, and it seems senseless to keep them in boxes in the back closet. So hopefully new caretakers can be found for these German ornaments being listed tonight. I realize a lot of ornaments, but I have collected for over 60 years... a long time indeed.
There is nothing wrong with these Christmas ornaments These being listed today are in very good shape. They are vintage, not reproductions. I guarantee that.
