Early 1900s Victorian Wire-wrapped Sailboat. Dresden Sails. Glass Xmas Ornament. For Sale
Early 1900s Victorian Wire-Wrapped Sail Boat with Dresden paper Sails. German Glass Christmas Tree Ornament.
This is one of the early glass ornaments, made in Lauscha, Germany. Blown without the use of a mold--free blown from a single tube of glass, it was shaped into thesailboat that you seeby the fathers in the German household. Then the mothers would paint and decorate the ornament. The grandmothers would do the wire-wrapping as they had the patience to do this very laborious difficult task. This was a cottage industry, a means for the German families to earn money during the winter when they could not work in the fields. A wonderful heritage in that each ornament is individually finished and a true work of art.
Unsilvered and then lacquered a pale cream, with slight hint of pale blue.
The gold Dresden sail is anchored in a cavity on top, filled with cotton.
Thin silver crinkly wire envelopes the entire glass bottom.
It is very tight, which is neat, and unusual for an oranment of this vintage.
Then the goat is entirely encased in a heavy crinkly wire, which forms handle to hang on the tree.
Three loops at bottom, and both sides add a Victorian elegance to this wonderful sailboat.
And in back is another loop, which stands behind the Dresden sails.
Really quite tight, and so nice after all these decades.
Little wire opening at top, so crinkly wire can be inserted to place on tree..
I will include crinkly wire if you wish to use, as this ornaments was created before hooks were manufactured.
A wonderful transportation related ornament.
An amazing ornament, in just great condition, with excellent coloration.
7.00" in height, and in very good shape considering it is well over 110 years old.
