This hand-crafted 19th century “cricket” is a charming expression of the maker’s vision, with cutouts resembling forms often found in more formal furniture chair backs (e.g., Chippendale, Queen Anne etc.).
At 9” high, the piece fits the definition of a “cricket”, a diminutive size stool designed for children. Additionally, those pieces with mortise-and-tenon construction were referred to as “joint stools”, and were popular from the 16th century well into the 18th century. This is both a “cricket” and a “joint stool.”
The board ends are quite graphic in nature, and mortised tightly into the top. With a one-board top, the maker has created a graphic cut-out easing transportation of the stool.
Splashes of red and bluish/gray cover the top of the piece. The underside is primarily bluish/gray, with paint-loss on the top revealing the red. The ends of the top piece have traces of green paint.
Whatever, the paint history, it is part of the appeal and charm of this early cricket, stool. Aside from the exceptional earlyconstruction, the paint history is most appealing and makes the piece.
20” w x 9” h x 9” d.
