Set of 6 Starched Cuffs in original Canister Box w/ Lid c: 1877

In Susan Jonas’ book - Cuff Links, she reports that thesleeve cuff evolved because of starch. In the mid-19th century, starch was available – which made the cuffs stiff. So, then the manufacturer createda fastener that was easy to use. The answer was a metal chain or fastener – thecuff link. At that time, (mid-19th century)almost everyone in the middle and upper class wore cuff links.

This set of SIX cuffs appear to be made of starched linen. Theyare embossed on the inside - size 10 ½ [Style] N. Each cuffmeasures approximately 10 ½ inches by 4 inches. In my research I found thatsome of these were dated to 1877 and some were advertised for sale in 1897. I think itis safe to say that these are circa 1870. Part of the label on the outside of the‘canister’ is missing; however, you can tell that the 0 and ½ are still visible(indicating the 10 ½ size). The cylindrical bentwood and metalcanister is similar to the canisters that spices would be stored in; however, this one is much taller. It measures 4 and 6/8 inches in height and 3.5 inchesacross the lid. It is a light, warm pecan color. It’s in excellent condition - the only imperfection is a darkened area on the lid - about the side of a dime (see picture). Ialso found in my research, that this is a rare find – they probably would havebeen discarded when the shirts went out of style. I think they would be awonderful addition to a men’s clothier or a museum, or a display, or ??
