Early Antique Bisque-head Doll, Arthur Schoenau 15”, Original Wig, Germany 1880s For Sale
Welcome to our sale! Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of antique and vintage Holiday memorabilia, paper ephemera, antique dolls and toys, and lovely old china and glassware. For your consideration, we present an adorable, 15” bisque, socket-head child doll on her original composition and wood ball-jointed body. This charming little Victorian sweetheart is an early one!
Please Lucybelle June! She is incised on the back of her head AS, which stands for Arthur Schoenau, followed by the number 3. She was made in Germany circa late 1880s.
She has very pretty bisque, hand-cut eye sockets, hand-painted multi-stroked feathered eyebrows, paintedupper and lower lashes and real hair lashes as well. She has blue glass sleep eyes, soft rosy cheeks, five tiny teeth in her open mouth and coral-shaded lips.
Her body has stick-style upper legs and has what we believe to be its original finish. She is wearing a lovely handmade dress in neutral shades of brown, beige, rust and black. This very pretty outfit was obviously just made for her as it fits her perfectly. She is wearing her original dark ash blondemohair wig with its original pate. The wig is a little sparse but it looks adorable on her.
Her bonnet, which matches her dress, is adorned with feathers and ornamentation and it isa very well-made wired and lined hat. Her handmade pantaloons are cream-colored as is her lace-trimmed full slip. She wears antique cream-colored socks and later black patent leather shoes that have bows and golden decorations.
We purchased Lucybelle several years ago from one of the most well-respected sale houses in the country, Morphy sales. She came along carrying her belovedantique metal cross – so we have always kept it with her.
Her exact condition is as follows: there areNO cracks, hairlines, or repairs to the bisque; however, she does have a small wig pull. Her eyes do sleep and her eye wax is in excellent condition. She has a small rub to the tip of her nose along with a speck of surface loss. Her body has some paint loss commensurate with her very elderly age. Her stringing is perfect, and she holds a pose beautifully. One index finger is missing the very tip and her toes have some minor flaking. There is a small amount of surface composition loss at the back of her neck socket. There areNO issues whatsoever with her pretty outfit and this costume suits her so well.
Arthur Schoenau of Schoenau & Hoffmeister fame produced this doll, and he had his own doll factory in Germanyfrom 1884 – on.
This is a rare, hard-to-find doll and we think she would make a superb acquisition for the collector. She has a charming, endearingpresence, is totally display-ready and would look beautiful in your cabinet!
