Heavy Antique Iron Brackets
This outstanding set of 19th century shelf brackets is made of cast iron and feature a foliate scroll design. This pair is unsigned and measures 13” (33 cm) in length on the longer (wall mount) side. One of the brackets is very slightly longer than the other, measuring 33.3 cm. The shorter horizontal sides of both pieces measure 7 ½” (19 cm). These brackets are very heavy, the two together have a combined weight of 5 lbs 11 oz. The pair has an old layer of black paint. The longer sides have old remnants of white and green paint on their edges. We do not see any evidence that the brackets were ever painted green or white. These two colors appear to be from a painter that was not careful when painting the wall around the brackets. There are a few small spatters of white on some of the leaves.
Both brackets are in very good condition with no breaks, bends, or repairs. There is rust on the old iron in several places, most evident in the corners (please see detail photos). The original black paint layer has worn off on the high points of the design.
