Early Roycroft hand-wrought copper Arts and Crafts cylinder vase.
Hammered copper with a worn 'bronze' finish (with darkened copper showing through), decorated with stylized tooled - carved arts and crafts flowers, and highlighted with green 'polychrome' accents.
Marked on the bottom with an early stamped Roycrofter logo (see photos). Made at the Roycrofters metal shop in Aurora, New York, circa 1910 - 1915.
This piece is beautifully hammered with fine elongated vertical hammer marks on the body and fine hammer work on the rim. The stylized flowers and stems are expertly carved and chased with exacting and deep cuts and hand-wrought techniques. Executed by a master coppersmith and a very fine example of this design. CONDITION:
Good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: Pleasing wear to the 'bronze' surface, allowing the copper to show through in places. Where the copper shows though it has darkened from age giving a warm overall patina to the piece. Light wear to the green accents, as shown. The photographs show all sides of the vase.
The photographs represent the vase as it would be seen in a very bright light, and in normal room lighting the vase looks somewhat darker. When seen in person the variations of patina and surface colors are much less noticeable. Although it has the 'bronze' finish that was popular on Roycroft copper, since the finish is worn, with darkened copper showing through, the overall effect, when seen in person, is much more like the darkened patina seen on pieces of Dirk Van Erp or Gustav Stickley copper.
