Edgar Allan Poe The Raven Gustave Dore Elephant Folio 19"x15" 1884 Harper 1st Ed:
THE RAVEN . Poe, Edgar Allan. Illustrations by Gustave Dore. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884.This is a first edition printed by Harper and Brothers in 1884, and contains all 26 plates as called for. 109pp. HUGE and highly decorated elephant folio 19" x 15"; all page edges gilt. Gray pictorial cloth with full-cover angel illustration by Dore stamped in gold and black on the front board; heavily worn with some loss at the edges, soiling, fading and a slight warp, also detached. Spine cover with loss, also has some tears and splits as shown with the remaining portion. The first 2 Eps are loose, as well as the half title. One plate detached. Couple leaves loosened throughout as well but still bound, as well as page 19 and the 'Nevermore' illustration is detached (and shows wear and edge chipping/browning). The rest of the illustrations remain in nice shape (SLIGHT damp staining to lower margins of all leaves, as well as top corner; does not affect the main illustration and remains in the margin in both cases) and are bound. The Dore versions of the Poe poetical lines and stanzas are absolutely breathtaking. Truly showstopping not only in size but beauty, these are very rare illustrations in the first edition form. This book has sold in the thousands, and is considered the epoch of Dore's artwork.
