I have another interesting and rare phonograph language item up for sale this week so be sure to check out my other listing as it is a neat piece sure to pique your interest.
For your consideration is a rare variation of the Edison Home cylinder phonograph model, probably produced in 1907, that is equipped with the ICS language study repeater mechanism that was typically used on Edison Standard phonographs and later Edison Gem phonographs.
This machine is all original and includes the witch's hat horn and 2 ICS language cylinders that came with the machine. The phonograph features a seldom-seen celluloid nameplate on the front which indicates that it was purchased at a Lyon and Healy store.
It is obvious that this machine was used very seldom as the topworks is in pristine, museum-quality, condition and the motor is very quiet. Speaking of the topworks, the black, glossy shellac-coated finish is in absolutely incredible condition retaining 99% of the gold pinstriping and details. The nickel plating is in fantastic shape as is evidenced in the accompanying photographs.
The motor is clean and very quiet and runs through many cylinders on a single winding. There is little to no gear wear to mention, the pot-metal pulley wheel is intact with no chips or warping, and the felt pads on the motor still, incredibly, retain their original green hue.
This great phonograph features a stunningly clean Model C 2 minute reproducer with good volume and a nice stylus. This machine has a nice working 2/4 minute gearing upgrade that allows for the playing of 4 minute cylinder records with an appropriate 4 minute reproducer which unfortunately is absent with this machine. It should be noted that the 2/4 minute gearing, while functioning very well, is missing the screw and piece of spring steel that hold the tiny gear selector pin in place. This pin, despite not having this piece of steel, sits firmly in place and does its job as oil keeps it from moving out of its position.
The 100+ year-old case shows common wear including separation of joints and flaking of the shellac finish on the sides due to the wood losing moisture. An unfortunate side-effect of this condition is that the screw holes for one of the top-plate hinges along with those for the lift bar hinge have been stripped. The case was not altered from its historic original state to reattach these hinges as that will be left up to the winning buyer. The nickel-plated hardware features typical oxidation and the crank handle has shellac loss. The top of the case is strong and shows slightde-lamination. There are some minor nicks to the edges and a few dings along with a small area with some faint remnants of white paint. The top still displays well despite these minor imperfections.
Given the condition of the case hinges, the heavy topworks and motor will be removed from the case for safe shipping. Replacing the motor and topworks is not a difficult task and I will provide simple instructions for doing so.
The machine comes with 2 clean 2 minute original ICS cylinders, French and Spanish languages respectively, although they reside in Italian language-marked ICS boxes. One box has a regular Edison Gold Moulded lid The ICS repeater mechanism is extremely clean and functions smoothly as can be seen in the video. Other 2 minute cylinder records can be purchased through various sources to be played on this machine so that you may enjoy more than the included language study recordings.
Also included is the original black and brass witches hat horn. This horn has streaks of surface rust and a few minor dents but still display well. The brass bell was not cleaned from its original state however a few bends were carefully straightened so that the rim was even and round.
In short, this Edison ICS Home is a unique and rare machine that is sure to tickle any serious collector's fancy. The pristine topworks -the nicest I've ever seen- surely makes up for the slightly more weathered case and horn. A simple set of instructions will accompany the machine so once it arrives you can set it up promptly and start playing records. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this sale or any other sale this week.
