Edwin De Leon - Document Fragment Signed For Sale

EDWIN DE LEON
The US (and Confederate) diplomat signs as a witness on a detached segment of a registered bond.
Document Fragment signed: "Edwin De Leon", 7¼x4½. No place, no date. De Leon and an unidentified name sign as witnesses on the edge of a registered bond. Spaces for transfer of bond ownership are left blank. Cancelled 25-cent US revenue stamp affixed at left edge. Edwin De Leon (1818-1891), a South Carolina newspaper editor, was active in the Presidential campaign of Franklin Pierce (1852). Pierce appointed him US Consul General in Cairo, where he served with distinction, promoting US commerce and helping to protect the city's Greek minority. When he learned of South Carolina's secession, he resigned his post and returned to America, offering his services to the Confederacy. Running the Union blockade again, he worked (skillfully but unsuccessfully) to secure British and French recognition of the Confederacy. After the war, he wrote several books about the Middle East. Corners lightly worn. Surface creases and folds. Notch missing on top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
