The original from which this Sekhmet jewelry was adapted was found during The University of Pennsylvania Museum's excavation (1915-1919) in the city of Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt. Among the pieces found in a cache of gold and silver jewelry, was a pendant of solid gold in the figure of Sekhmet, the lioness-headed goddess of medicine and healing. The ancient Egyptians wore amulets such as this one, to offer the protection of a particular divinity to the wearer.
