Elgin Watch Company And Seth Thomas Naval Ship Chronometer Clock Carrying Case:
A rare Elgin Watch Company and Seth Thomas Company naval clock chronometer carrying case. I believe this case to date from WW2 and there are actually 2 tags from 2 separate manufacturers. The brass embossed tag on front says Elgin Watch Company Elgin Illinois U.S.A. and the stamped tag on bottom of case says Instrument and carrying cases by Seth Thomas Clock Thomaston Conn. I am not an expert in naval clocks but I do know many manufacturers were in competition for Naval contracts during WW2 is this a case that was a collaboration of 2 companies? The case appears to be made of Walnut and has a brass hook which locks to the tightening wheel on front to secure in closed position. There are 3 sets of holes on each side with eyelets that once held down a leather carrying strap. There is one hole on each side of bottom lip to hold to ships console top. The case opens to a green felt holding area for chronometer unfortunately that piece is not with case. The case has some minor nicks and a mark on front which I believe can be cleaned up I leave original up to buyer to clean off small marks. The piano hinge works great and the box sits perfectly on halves box is very sound and strong no chips. A wonderful rare piece of American History. if you have any questions please ask before offerding.
