Elihu Root ( 1845-1937) was a brilliant lawyer, Secretary of State, Secretary of War , U.S. Senator and Nobel Peace Prize Winner. An authentic check made payable to N. L. Coe , dated April 22, 1889 drawn on the Bank of North America in NYC. signed in dark ink by Elihu Root. N.L. ( Norman Leslie) Coe was a photographer-detective concerned with murder and crime scenes he encountered working with the NY Police Dept. The check( nearly 127 years old) measures 8\"X 3\"and is in good condition with a fold and some staining to the front and verso and a cut cancellation neither of which touch Root\'s signature.
