The final lines of her well-loved poem "Rock Me to Sleep", signed as Elizabeth Akers
Autograph Poem signed: "Clasped to your heart in a loving embrace,/With your light lashes just swiping my face,/Never hereafter to wake or to weep./Rock me to sleep, mother - Rock me to sleep!"/Elizabeth Akers/September, 1902". 4x2½. American author Elizabeth Chase Akers Allen (1832-1911) wrote both prose and poetry, but is best remembered for her poems, especially for the 6 stanza poem "Rock Me to Sleep" (1882), a lament on the death of a mother, the last four lines of which she has written here. Allen also wrote for the Atlantic Monthly, and reported from Europe for the Portland [Maine] Transcript and the Boston Evening Gazette. In 1860 she married sculptor Paul Akers, who died the following year. She re-married (to E. M. Allen) in 1865, but has nevertheless signed here as Elizabeth Akers.
