ELLA WHEELER WILCOX - AUTOGRAPH POEM SIGNED ELLA WHEELER WILCOX This handwritten segment of her poem “I Will be Worthy of It” is signed by the poet Autograph Poem signed: "Ella Wheeler Wilcox", 1p, 7¾x9½. Not titled. Two stanzas of her poem, "I Will Be Worthy Of It". In full: "'I may not reach the heights I seek,/My untried strength may fail me,/Or, half-way up the mountain peak/Fierce tempests may assail me;/But though my goal I never see/This thought shall always dwell with me/I will be worthy of it." "I may not triumph in success,/Despite my earnest labour;/I may not grasp results that bless/The efforts of my neighbour./But though life's dearest joy I miss/There lies a nameless strength in this -/I will be worthy of it.'" This may be an early version of the poem. Published versions show three stanzas for this poem. In the poem offered here, the last three lines of the first stanza appear as the last three lines of the second stanza in published versions and the last three lines of the second stanza appear as the last three lines of the third stanza in published versions. Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919) was an American author and poet. Her best-known work was Poems of Passion. Her most enduring work was "Solitude", which contains the lines, "Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone". She wrote more than 20 volumes of verse including Poems of Pleasure (1888), Poems of Sentiment (1906), Pastels (1909), Gems (1912) and Cameos (1914). She also wrote a daily poem for a newspaper syndicate, fiction, essays and works on spiritualism. Folds, minor spotting. Otherwise, fine condition.
