Antique French engraving, "La Mode Illustree", printed in Paris, c1870. The fashion plate is delicately hand-colored and magnificently embellished to create a 3-D scene, featuring a bride and her attendant, under glass. Couture details in silk, satin, organdy, and handmade Brussels lace. The bride wears a white satin gown, studded with tiny seed pearls; net lace veil and ruffle; handmade Brussels Duchesse lace with Point de Gaz roses; pearl necklace; rhinestone earring; and pearl tiara. Her attendant wears layers of pale pink silk, studded with tiny silk ribbonwork flowers; pleated organdyruffled petticoat; handmade Duchesse lace; pearl earring; and tiny ribbonwork flowers in her hair.The detail is exceptional, enhancing the 3-dimensional quality.Titled at the bottom, center: "La Mode Illustree .. Bureaux de Journal,56 Rue Jacob, Paris". Custom gilt wood shadow box frame, with gilt filet liner and wide sloped ivory velvet mat. The outside dimensions are apx 18 3/8" X 15 1/8". There is minor foxing on the engraving, andsome darkening of the velvet at the top; otherwise very good, all-original, well-preserved condition. Enlarge photos for detail.
