RARE EARLY GEORGE III ENGLISH STERLING SILVER SAUCE BOAT; WILLIAM CRIPPS, LONDON 1763
We are pleased to offer this extremely rare early George III sauce boat.
From one of the more important London makers of the day William Cripss in 1763.
Apprenticed under the renowned David Willaume in 1731. First listed in 1743.
As might be expected from his training under Willaume, Cripps was a highly talented silversmith (Grimwade pg 479-80). Examples in major collections.
Classic wide oval form with gently scalloped rim.
Well cast rolled acanthus cap split and double scroll handle.
Equally well cast wavy shell cap stepped hoof feet.
Hallmarked as shown, maker rubbed.
This rare 1763 sterling sauce boat is 6 3/4 inches long and 4 1/4 tall and weighs 6 (standard) ounces.
Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous silver patina. Stands perfectly firm on table or display shelf. Two barely noted splits to rim 1/32 inch or so.
For the discerning collector of the finest George III silver. Focused upon the most important makers of the day. An exceptional 1763 William Cripps shell and hoof foot sauce boat.
