RARE ENGLISH GEORGE III STERLING SILVER ACANTHUS & SCROLL HANDLE BASKET CENTRE PIECE; PIERCED SHELL AND FLORAL; EXCELLENT CONDITION; 25 OUNCES
We are pleased to offer this important early George III sterling silver acanthus and scroll handle centrepiece.
Crafted in London in 1766.
Classic raised oval form.
Boldly cast rolled vine frame acanthus and scroll handles. Rising from shell terminal.
United by petal gadroon streams, interrupted by leaf and globe displays.
Beautifully pierced four petal flower head panel side walls. Alternating with pierced scrolling ovals.
Atop equally striking pierced flower and vine cap twin vine scroll vine tip feet. Joined by leaf and vine panels.
Under the base engraved "ML" (?) script and later engraved AD 1776 date basket made.
English sterling acanthus handle centrepiece 12 1/2 inches across handles and 8 1/2 across.
Exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling weighs 25 (standard) ounces.
Hallmarked as shown. The marks well struck. No maker's mark.
In excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The beautiful shell and floral decoration retains its original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. Stands perfectly firm on table or display shelf. No apparent splits or repair to extensive pierced work.
