We are quite pleased to offer this rare Victorian sterling silver Bacchus & Satyr head figural compote.
One of the most richly decorated examples of Victorian figural silver we have ever owned.
From Robert Harper in 1875. First listed in 1853. Known for beautifully designed silver, displaying superb finish detail.
Bearing period engraved kneeling dragon family crest. Motto "Truth Conquers". This is the motto for Keith, O'Shea Mc Kenny and others.
The compote with overflow circular top. Adorned with series of brilliantly detailed Bacchus, demon and maiden heads. Alternating with groups of Renaissance instruments, text and ribbon. United by elegant beaded garland.
The centre above with star burst floral medallion, set in octagonal petal frame. Amidst streaming bead, bell flower and single floating stars.
Supported by twin knop, decorated with Satyr mask and maiden profile.
Itself atop thick well cast scallop edge base. Conforming demon and maiden heads, bead and musical instrument.
This important Victorian sterling silver Bacchus, Satyr and medallion floral and bead compote is 9 1/2 inches diameter at top.
Exceptionally thick, heavy guage stering construction it weighs 35 1/2 standard ounces.
Hallmarked as shown.
Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The raised Satyr and Bacchus heads, profiles, floral and bead decoration retains most all of its original crisp vibrant hand chased detail.
