English Sterling Silver Lion Handle Montieth Punch Bowl 1897 50 Oz Rare For Sale
MONUMENTAL 1897 ENGLISH STERLING SILVER MONTIETH PUNCH BOWL; LION AND DROP RING HANDLES; WEIGHS 59 OUNCES; EXCELLENT
We are pleased to offer monumental Victorian sterling silver lion handle punch bowl.
In Montieth form.
It is a superb re-creation of a c1695 William and Mary design. See Waldron page 19 for a near identical example.
From the very rarely seen Sheffield work shop of Alexander Clark in 1897. Clark was listed for only four years, 1894 to 1898. As such, his work is almost never observed.
Classic circular form with elegant slender panel swirl fluting.
Beautifully cast classical maiden and notch and scallop rim. Just as found in the original c1695 design.
The notches support the foot of glasses, which are placed into the iced punch for cooling.
Boldly cast lion and ring handles. The majestic beasts carved in exceptional relief. The tip of the lion's nose is near 1 1/4 inches from the bowl surface.
Later presentation plaque and ebony base as shown.
This monumental Victorian presentation Montieth punch bowl 10 3/4 inches across handle and 7 1/2 tall.
Exceptionally thick, heavy guage solid sterling construction it weighs 59 (standard) ounces. Of course that is without the base.
Hallmarked as shown, including lion passant on the rings.
In excellent condition, near pristine. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The elegant maiden head rim and lion handles retain their original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. Stands perfectly firm on table or display shelf. Interior perfectly clean. Bit of wear to later ebony base.
For the discerning collector of the finest Victorian re-creations of late 17th century William & Mary forms. A monumental Victorian sterling silver lion handle Montieth punch bowl. In excellent condition.
Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed. Whether the item is alone or part of a set. We very much welcome your interest. We are collectors first. As such, we are quite easy to work with.
We happily combine items when shipping, saving you costs. We ship twice weekly, usually US Postal Priority. Fully insured for domestic packages, and air parcel overseas. We charge a bit more than actual cost for custom size boxes, shipping materials and to pay for professional packing.
We make great effort to accurately describe each item listed. Returns are accepted, if either condition, country of origin or dating is significantly incorrect. In such cases we refund your shipping costs as well. Like you, we are only human, and make mistakes. Hopefully, not too many.
Remember, the items you see are antiques. Hence, have an expected amount of wear from normal use. As such, returning an item because we failed to mention the tiniest bit of wear, or barely discernible flaw is not acceptable. Nor do we accept returns based on buyer's remorse. Nor change of taste, or because a buyer did not realize how "small" four inches might be once in hand.
