We are pleased to offer this exceptional early George III Thoms family tankard.
Beautifully engraved family arms a rampant demi-unicorn supporting ermine shield.
The marks cancelled with assay office LAO 8948 case number. Given later added spout not marked, the tankard submitted to the assay office to guarantee it was "altered legitimately" and it was.
From Jacob Marsh in 1776. First listed 1744 at the Unicorn, perhaps name of his shop.
Classic baluster with raised banding to centre. An identical slightly earlier c1760 example illustrated in Waldron page 201.
Well cast overhang cover, high dome. Elegant pierced heart centre vine thumb piece.
Equally well cast wide barrel hinge, oval, urn and globe strap handle. Fisnished with unique twisted scroll cap medallion to lower end.
Hallmarked as shown, under cover and base, along with assay office LAO 8948.
Thoms family tankard is 8 1/2 inches tall same handle to spout.
Thick heavy guage sterling weighs 32 standard ounces.
Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous silver patina. Cover closes flush, handle secure. The unicorn and shield crest retains its original detail. Couple shallow pinheads. Spout professional added later.
