Epic of Gilgamesh Tablet 11 Neo Assyrian 7th century BC. Stone tablet, quartzite-limestone (not plastic resin), 6 inches length (14 cm), 5.25” width (13 cm), one inch thickness (30 mm), with display stand & detailed translation. British Museum duplicate-mold replica "Epic of Gilgamesh" Flood Tablet, eleventh of the thirteen tablet Gilgamesh Set, excavated from the Nineveh Library of Ashurbanipal by A.H. Layard in the mid 19th century. This ancient Mesopotamian version of the Old Testament flood story was first identified in 1872 by British Museum Cuneiform assistant George Smith. Representing humankind's oldest reference to the Deluge, the tablet shares several verbatim excerpts with the later Biblical version of the Flood Story. It is forerunner of the famous Babylonian "Gilgamesh Epic" and also the source of the old Babylonian "Atra-Hasis Flood Myth." Although found in the 600 BC Nineveh Library of Ashurbanipal, the tablet is a scribal copy of a much earlier Sumerian tablet. Commentators agree that the story hails from a much earlier epoch, not long after the Flood described in the story. The text relates how the gods sent a flood to destroy the world. Like Noah, the hero Utnapishtim is forewarned and deploys the local population to help build a large bitumen-lined "Ark" to escape and preserve living things. Utnapishtim survives the flood while the rest of humankind is destroyed, eventually landing on a mountain peak named Nimush. After the flood waters subside, he sends out pigeons until they return with evidence of dry land. "O man of Shuruppak, son of Ubartutu, Tear down the house and build a boat. Abandon wealth and seek living beings. Spurn possessions and keep alive the living. Make living beings go up into the boat. The boat which you are to build, its dimensions must measure equal to each other, its length must correspond to its width. Roof it over like the Apsu."
