We have here the story of two people’s lives, as lived in the very short period 1906-1908. HE was Richard PIPER, born 1883 at Cooyal near Mudgee NSW, the son of Richard Piper and Susan nee MAIDEN. His future lay in the Methodist Church; he studied (and lived) at “The Hermitage” , the Methodist Theological College that was then part of what is Newington College at Stanmore in Sydney. He was ordained in Sydney April 1907 and by May was in Fiji where he initiated a combined mission for the English and Indian population. He stayed in Fiji for 20 years; after returning to Australia in 1926 he held several important posts within the Methodist organisation, including President of NSW Conference of Methodist Church of Australasia in 1946. He was a popular local preacher, and gave regular “Lantern Addresses” (slide nights) on his time in Fiji in the 1930s and 1940s. He died in Sydney in 1967. SHE was Minna Lillian FRASER, born Berrima 1881 to Charles Edward Fraser and Elizabeth nee CORNWALL. Her father was for many years the manager of Mount Broughton, a large property at Moss Vale NSW owned by W O Gilchrist. Like many young women of her time, Min was an avid collector of postcards, and in the Sydney Mail of 27 June 1906 Postcard Exchange column she advertised that she “wishes to exchange with other collectors in this and other States. Views and actresses preferred.” (Her sister Clara also advertised in the same column). The result of this is the vast bulk of this collection – postcards sent from other collectors, who would expect one from Min in return. However like many enthusiasms, this one proved to be short-lived; even within a few months she seemed to be losing interest, and the vast bulk of these exchanged cards date from 1906. THEY became a couple very quickly (considering the social mores of the times.) The courtship begins with a first, fairly formal postcard from “Dick” in March 1906 but quickly progresses to more affectionate exchanges, where he begins to use their own private “code” (which seems to owe a little to the Greek.) Once Dick is sent to Fiji there seems to be a definite understanding and indeed he returns to NSW to marry Min at Waverley Methodist Church 14 April 1908. They return to Fiji and from then on to all intents and purposes her postcard collection is ended, apart from odd cards from family and friends. The do not appear to have had any surviving children, and Min died in Sydney in 1953. I collect certain kinds of postcards. I bought this large collection and extracted the ones I wanted. Because of the large size of the collection, I will be listing it in several sections. Happy to combine – within Australia about 20 cards can travel for the same $3.30 postage cost, International usually 3 cards can travel for $3.30, any more will cost $8.70. PLEASE NOTE – This cheaper Large Letter rate does not have any tracking, so if the total card values exceed $50, the parcel must be Registered Post – in Australia this costs an extra $3. Internationally it will be via Registered Post International 500g satchel – please check for your own country – generally in the $22 - $28 range.

International Buyers please note: Unless the postage method quoted on this listing is shown as Express Courier International or Registered Post International, then your item is being sent either at Large Letter rate or as an ordinary Air Mail Parcel; both of these have NO TRACKING. If you require a more expensive method of posting which comes with tracking, please contact me before you pay. If you accept this much cheaper method of posting, PLEASE BE PATIENT; 20-25 days is not uncommon for air mail delivery from Australia. AUSTRALIAN BUYERS: if your postage method is shown as Standard Delivery, it is being sent as a Large Letter which has NO TRACKING. If you would prefer to pay extra to add tracking please contact me BEFORE you pay.

In her Postcard Exchange advertisement Min stated “Actresses preferred”. A lot of this last section of listings for this collection are actress or glamour postcards. The rest are sentimental, romantic, humorous “best wishes” – most are from Min’s postcard pals, some of whom obviously later became friends. A few are from Dick in their courting days, the rest from other family and friends. Almost all have been postally used, many have stamps removed; please use photos to check condition / Trove)

  • The items I sell are vintage; they are second hand, old, sometimes very old. I try to describe and photograph my items honestly and to the best of my ability; however if pristine condition is very important to you, I feel you should be buying from a regular shop, where you can inspect the items personally. Please note that all my items are sold \"as is\", with no warranty implied, and that the photos form part of the description, which should be read carefully. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA ASK A QUESTION - BOTTOM LEFT OF EVERY LISTING.
Shipping and Payment Terms; Combining Items
  • Payment in Australia may be made by PayPal or Bank Deposit, International payments by PayPal only
  • If you win more than one item in a listing please wait for a combined invoice from me to save you on postage and insurance costs. I always wait until the last item in an sale listing finishes before sending invoices in case buyers win more than one item. If you win an item and are planning to offer on an item in a later-finishing sale, please email me to let me know, and I will wait until that sale has finished to send you a combined invoice
  • I would normally expect payment within 5 days; if for some reason this is not possible, please contact me to explain
  • Many of my items are very light and could be combined without much (or any) increase in postage costs. Once the value of a parcel exceeds $100 postal insurance must be paid. Within Australia this costs $4.45; the cost for Registered Post International varies - please ask for a quote.
  • International buyers please note: Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or postage charges. These charges are the buyer\'s responsibility. Please check with your country\'s Customs Office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to offerding. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (postage) company or when you pick the item up – do not confuse them for additional postage charges. Please do not ask for items to be declared as gifts or undervalued; actions like these are an offence under the International Postal Regulations.
response Information

It has always been my policy to leave Positive response when an item has been paid for and I have posted the parcel. I will always email you to let you know when that occurs, so you may know when to expect the parcel. Leaving response is not compulsory; if you want to leave me Positive response, then that is very nice and I appreciate it. If you have some problem with our transaction, and you feel like leaving me Neutral or Negative response, please contact me BEFORE leaving response so that we can work something out that will leave us both feeling happier. I always try to describe my items fully and honestly, and work hard to try and ensure that my buyers are satisfied. However I am only human; SHOULD a problem arise please contact me FIRST. The Ratings stars. Oh dear. Please be aware that considers anything less than 5 (ie a perfect rating) to be substandard, and sellers can be penalised (ie barred from selling) once their rating falls below 4.8. You do not HAVE to click these rating stars. If you do, please be realistic about things over which I as the seller had no control – like what Australia Post delivery and insurance charges are, how long the Postal Service took to deliver your parcel (remember WA is a long way from NSW and that estimated times of arrival for overseas airmail parcels are frequently understated), whether if it was Registered or Insured Post they actually left you a card to say you needed to go to the PO to pick it up, or if you paid by eCheque, the time it took that cheque to clear. Now have changed the goalposts again; they have decided that as well as attracting lots of 4 and 5 ratings, sellers should not attract ANY 1, 2 or 3 ratings. As few as 4 ratings in the 1, 2 or 3 category can bar the seller from . So again, if you feel your experience has not been good, and feel like leaving me 1, 2 or 3 stars in any category, PLEASE contact me first - if I don\'t know you are unhappy I can\'t do anything about it. ASK A QUESTION IS AT THE BOTTOM LEFT OF EVERY LISTING. Sorry about the length of this message; I assume that you may want to remain an buyer, and hope that if you buy from me your experience will be a happy one. It is just that with the way things are changing, there may no longer be small sellers of vintage items (like me) on to buy from.
