The themes of this painting are unity, completion and renewal. As such it is symbolic of marriage. Within marriage husband
and wife are united as one which brings completion to the individual souls. All marriage made by Hashem (G-d) join the two souls for eternity. Through their
eternal union comes the renewal of life.
The basic design is a hexagon constructed from six "zayin" shaped pieces. The 6 outer bars represent the Six Days of Creation.
The six extensions into the center make a total of twelve symbolizing a complete yearly cycle. The eighteen shades of color
represent Life, "Chai".
The entire design is repeated again and the two are nested together. The two Magen Davids (Stars of David) represent husband and wife.
Orange is used here to depict the strength of the sun and of the day reflecting man. Blue portrays the woman who
traditionally is related to the moon and night. Together the two stars form 13 windows. In Hebrew numerology, 13 is the value for the word
Ahava (love) and Echad (one, oneness or unity).
The shifting shades of the backgrounds from light to dark and dark to light demonstrate the change from day to night and the
constant renewal of life which is accomplished when husband and wife are joined as one in unity and love. The background also centers the
marriage in the timelessness of eternity.
On an allegorical level this artwork refers to the constant relationship of Hashem with the Jewish people. At Matan Torah (the giving of the Torah)
and in Shir Hashirim (Song of Songs) Hashem is viewed as the groom and Israel His bride. Hashem related to us through the 13 Attributes
of Mercy. When we return His love by following his Mitzvot, our life as a nation is constantly renewed granting us life in this world and life in the
world to come.
Although the artist created this piece of artwork as described above, his goal was to have each person discover his own meaning by
contemplating and meditating.
