The Etruscansare a rather mysterious people who, at the height of their power, (6th to 5thCenturies B.C.) dominated north-west Italy and the islands of Elba and Corsica. They had wide trade and cultural contacts throughout the Mediterranean andsouth Europe. Their towns were self-governing. The resulting politicalinstability ended with them being defeated by Gaulish tribes (430 to 350 B.C.)and later the Romans. The last of their cities fell to Rome about 250 B.C.However, the relationship with the Romans was not all that simple. The lastRoman kings were Etruscan. Many features of Roman civilization were borrowed fromthe Etruscans.
